The Actress

I’ve played leading ladies

Put my soul to the test

And taken on roles

In life’s plays I know best.

I’ve put on the mask

Of the Goddess with ease

The dress of the harlot

Descended with sleaze.

I’ve played the black widow

The witch, femme-fatale

And spun such fine webs

With delusions that sell.

My role as the drama queen

Seduced me with flair

For the tragic, noblesque

I wore crowns of despair.

I have draped on the cloak

Of the widow, who mourns

For a lover unknown

Melancholic forlorn.

My angel of innocence

Sweet with delight

She’s danced as Salome

Lust, dark as the night.

Removing these masks

Used in life’s masquerades

Leaves me naked with fear

For my soul, bare is laid.

For the role of myself

Is the greatest I’ve played

Crowned with courage and love

The finest accolade.

Love Song

Can I sing you a love song

I promise I’ll try

To keep it sincere

And not make you cry

A song about meeting

And talking and fleeting

Hellos and goodbyes

With eyes that don’t lie.

Can I sing you a love song

I promise I’ll try

To keep it sincere

And not make you cry

Hearts filled with joy

You’ll remember it well

The castles you built

The stories you’d tell.

Can I sing you a love song

I promise I’ll try

To keep it sincere

And not make you cry

The messages left

On the answerphone

When out in the party

With eyes that would roam.

Can I sing you a love song

I promise I’ll try

To keep it sincere

And not make you cry

Hearts that miss beats

Tripping over your words

In a bid to sound calm

Under pressure, absurd.

Can I sing you a love song

I promise I’ll try

To keep it sincere

And not let you cry

Well silence is golden

And so they say

There’s love in the space

Where my presence once made.

Breathless

I know sometimes I seem a little cold,
The fact remains
You leave me breathless.
And though it’s sad to say
That come what pain I felt in vain,
Still leave me breathless

Cos every time I think of you,
I cry a thousand tears, it’s true
I’m breathless.
And when you call my name
Boy I come running all the same,
Still leave me breathless

There’s some that say,
There’ll come a day
When you won’t matter much to me boy,
Much to me.
I pray that in the meantime I’ll survive

On memories of bliss,
I’ve stolen from your kiss,

Still leave me breathless
Still leave me breathless

Cos when my final curtain falls
On my sweet memories I’ll call
To carry me away
Carry me away.

You leave me breathless, breathless….

Hold me, hurt me
Stroke me and curse me
Drinking from empty wells, under spells

Soothe me, seduce me
Bind me, you blind me
I’m drinking from empty wells

They only miss the water
Only miss the water, only miss the water when the well’s run dry

Scent me, taste me
Own me then waste me
Drinking from empty wells

Caress me, undress me
Suppress me, depress me
Till I’m drinking from empty wells

They only miss the water, only miss the water
Only miss the water when the well’s run dry.
They only miss the water, only miss the water
Only miss the water when the well’s run dry

Summers

Scent of grass that’s freshly cut
The colours burst to lift my heart
Dragons snap with Holly’s hock
The Dandy’s lion, the Roses rock
Ice cream drips on stones and sand
The towels and lotion, waves in motion
Boats and gliders, guards on hand
Wicker baskets, cakes and tea
The blankets spread, the grasses green
The ducks need feeding, Cabbage Whites,
That spread their wings, Catch rays mid flight

You

When darkness came

And I descended

Drunk in sorrow

Never ended

I called for you

To shine your light

I called for you

To make it right

When shards of glass

That passed for tears

Fell from my eyes

Those wasted years

I called for you

To shine your light

I called for you

To make it right

And When I stumbled

On my knees

Searching for some

Way to please

I called for you

To shine your light

I called for you

To make it right

And when my mind and body broken

Screamed for love

For some small token

I called for you

To shine your light

I called for you

To make it right
